A few weeks ago, I was invited to photograph a sparring event at Georgetown's new boxing gym, Eight Count Boxing + Fitness. It was an amazing experience for me. To quote Coach Herb Fulton from the website, "for six years I've volunteered teaching others how to both compete and for non boxers overcome almost anything in life through physical fitness." The power behind that motivational attitude is palpable in the atmosphere of the place, and his vision lives in the spirit of not only the boxers but also the collection of friends, family, and supporters that I had the pleasure of being near that day.
This outsider, non-boxer, 5 foot tall woman with a camera (ok, FOUR cameras) was made to feel welcome from the very beginning. I was overwhelmed with the sense of community, the can-do attitude, and of course with the fitness, focus, and strength exhibited by the athletes.
What I took with me from that day was a lot more than just a few rolls of photographs. Coach Herb is right: you must be confident. No excuses. And no matter where you stand, you are someone's Champ.
What I have included here is a selection of photographs from that day. See the whole set here http://www.texasgirlphotography.com/boxing

At the end of August, there will be a fundraiser event benefiting local and boxing charities, presented by the gym. I hope you will check it out and consider making a donation. Please see bit.ly/sterlinggloves for more information.
